Jetstar: onward ticket checks

Short answer

For Bali, yes. Jetstar's guide to travelling to and from Bali says you need proof of a return flight booking to Australia, or an onward flight to another country departing within your visa validity period. Its international identification page says some journeys need proof of onward journey and that arranging documents is your responsibility. For New Zealand, Immigration New Zealand says onward tickets must be paid for before travel, so a reservation does not meet that rule.

What Jetstar says for Bali

Jetstar's Bali page, updated 30 June 2026, lists three things to complete before travel: the All Indonesia Arrival Card, a visa application and the Bali tourist fee. It then lists what you will also need: a passport in good condition valid at least six months from your planned departure from Indonesia, and proof of a return flight booking to Australia or an onward flight to another country departing within your visa validity period.

The page explains that a Visa on Arrival is valid for 30 days and can be applied for online or on arrival, and that staying longer than 30 days means applying for a visa online. On a Visa on Arrival, the latest your onward flight can leave is therefore 30 days after you land.

Other Jetstar international flights

Jetstar's travel identification page covers every international flight. All passengers, children and infants included, show a passport at check-in, and some journeys also need visas or proof of onward journey. The page says understanding and arranging the documents is your responsibility and that Jetstar won't be able to assist if you arrive at the airport without them.

For the details it sends you to your destination's embassy or consulate, so on any Jetstar route other than Bali the onward requirement is the destination's own.

New Zealand: a paid ticket

INZ adds that the ticket can be asked for at check-in and at the border, that a cruise itinerary or a letter from the owner of a private craft can stand in for a plane ticket, and that if your next country also has an onward requirement you may be asked for the ticket out of there too.

Jetstar's identification page also reminds travellers to New Zealand that they need an NZeTA, applied for at least 72 hours before travel, and that Australian passport holders do not.

Before a one-way Jetstar flight

  1. 01BaliDate the exit inside your visa period and keep the booking reference with your Arrival Card QR code.
  2. 02New ZealandPay for the ticket out, and keep the e-ticket number as well as the booking reference.
  3. 03Everywhere elseCheck the embassy or consulate of your destination, as Jetstar suggests, then book an exit that matches what it asks for.

FlyProof is independent and has no partnership with Jetstar. A FlyProof reservation is a real booking with a reference that can be checked, which matches Jetstar's Bali wording; it is not a paid ticket and is not suitable for New Zealand.
