FlyProof

Onward ticket for Ecuador

Short answer

It depends on how you enter. For visa-free visitors, GOV.UK says Ecuadorean border control may ask for proof of a return or onward journey, so it is a question to be ready for rather than a published condition. Nationalities that need a tourist visa must give the Foreign Ministry a travel itinerary and round-trip tickets with the application. The Galápagos are a separate check: GOV.UK lists evidence of a return flight to the mainland among the requirements for the islands.

What proof of onward travel means here

Evidence that you will leave Ecuador before your permitted stay ends, usually a flight out with a booking reference someone can look up. The full explanation, including what does and does not count, is in our proof of onward travel guide.

When you may be asked

  • At the immigration desk in Quito (UIO), where every arrival is recorded in the national migration database and GOV.UK says officers may ask your reason for travel and for proof of a return or onward journey.
  • At check-in for a one-way flight to Quito or Guayaquil, where the airline decides whether to board a passenger with no departure booked.
  • At check-in for a flight to the Galápagos, where GOV.UK lists evidence of a return flight to the mainland, a hotel booking or invitation, the transit control card and health insurance.
  • When nationals on the Foreign Ministry's visa list apply for a tourist visa, since the application asks for an itinerary and round-trip tickets up front.

Airline and check-in

  • Many visitors fly into Quito one-way and leave overland for Peru or Colombia weeks later. The agent at your departure airport cannot verify a future bus trip, so a flight reservation out of UIO is easier for them to accept.
  • Galápagos flights leave from the mainland, and the islands want evidence of the flight back. That domestic return is a different booking from any international exit you show in Quito.
  • FCDO advises British travellers against all but essential travel to Guayaquil except airside transit, and suggests checking with the airline before booking that a Galápagos connection through GYE keeps you airside.

Ecuador: what to know

  • GOV.UK says British visitors can stay without a visa for up to 90 days in any 12-month period and can pay to extend by another 90 days, applying before the first period ends. Ecuador's human mobility law, as quoted by the Foreign Ministry, sets the same 90-day tourist stay, extendable once.
  • Overstaying brings a fine on departure, and GOV.UK says you will not be allowed back into Ecuador unless it is paid before you leave.
  • The Foreign Ministry publishes the list of nationalities that need a visa to enter, which includes China, India, the Philippines, Vietnam, Cuba and Venezuela among others. Haitian nationals must also complete a tourist registration before travel.
  • For those nationalities, the 90-day tourist visa asks for a passport with 6 months of validity, an apostilled criminal record certificate for adults, proof of lawful means of support, and a travel itinerary with round-trip tickets. The Foreign Ministry charges 50 US dollars to apply and 30 US dollars on issue.
  • Since 11 January 2024, GOV.UK says visitors entering by land or river from Peru or Colombia must present an apostilled criminal record certificate or ask officers to run a check on the SIMIEC system. Visa holders and under-18s are among those exempt, and air arrivals are not affected.
  • Tourists can stay up to 60 days in the Galápagos. GOV.UK lists a hotel booking or invitation, a return flight to the mainland, a transit control card bought at the departure airport before check-in, and travel health insurance, which is mandatory there.
  • GOV.UK says your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you arrive in Ecuador.

What may count as proof

  • A dated flight or bus booking out of Ecuador within your 90 days, for the officer who asks about your return or onward journey.
  • For visa applicants, the itinerary and round-trip tickets the Foreign Ministry lists, with the criminal record certificate and proof of means.
  • For the Galápagos: the return flight to the mainland, the transit control card receipt and your health insurance policy.
  • A reservation with a reference the airline can confirm, such as a FlyProof reservation, if you have not bought your exit yet.

When to arrange it

Visa-free travellers should have the departure booking live at check-in and at the Quito immigration desk. Visa applicants submit the round-trip tickets with the online application, so ask the consulate whether a reservation must still be live when the decision comes. For the Galápagos, have the return to the mainland booked before you check in for the island flight.

Common mistakes

  • Crossing from Peru or Colombia by land without the criminal record certificate. GOV.UK says it is mandatory on land and river entries unless an exemption applies or officers run the SIMIEC check.
  • Riding a bus that skips the official checkpoint. Without an entry stamp you can face serious immigration problems, and GOV.UK says evading control leads to refusal on later visits.
  • Planning the Galápagos around a one-way island flight. GOV.UK lists evidence of a return flight to the mainland among the entry requirements.
  • Assuming the visa-free 90 days restart with each trip. GOV.UK counts them across any 12-month period.
  • Leaving the round-trip tickets out of a visa application. The Foreign Ministry lists them, with the itinerary, among the mandatory requirements.

Ecuador questions

01Does Ecuador require an onward ticket?

For visa-free visitors it is not a published condition, but GOV.UK says border control may ask for proof of a return or onward journey. Visa applicants must provide round-trip tickets. In both cases a dated exit is the safer thing to carry.

02Can I leave Ecuador by bus to Peru or Colombia?

Yes, through an official checkpoint where your exit is registered. An airline flying you into Quito cannot check a future bus trip, though, so a flight reservation is easier to show at check-in. See onward ticket vs return ticket for how exits to a third country count.

03What do I need for a Galápagos flight?

GOV.UK lists a hotel booking or invitation letter, evidence of a return flight to the mainland, a transit control card bought at the departure airport before check-in, and travel health insurance. Stays on the islands are limited to 60 days.

04Is a flight reservation accepted for an Ecuador tourist visa?

The Foreign Ministry asks for a travel itinerary and round-trip tickets and does not say whether a reservation is enough. A held booking shows the dates and a reference the airline can confirm while it is live, and the consulate decides. The flight reservation for visa guide covers what consulates usually look for.
