An onward ticket, also called an onward flight ticket or onward flight, is a booking that shows you leaving the country you are about to enter. Airlines ask for it on one-way itineraries, immigration can ask on arrival, and it appears on many visa checklists. Here is what the phrase means and how to satisfy it without buying a flight you will not take.

A return ticket takes you back to where you started. An onward ticket takes you anywhere else, which matters for long trips: if you are flying into Bangkok and moving on to Vietnam by land, a held flight from Bangkok to Hanoi or Kuala Lumpur is an onward ticket even though you never fly it. Most visa-exempt and visa-on-arrival entries accept either.
What an onward flight ticket must show
Your name as in your passport, a departure date within the stay you are allowed, the flight number and route, and a booking reference. Whether it is paid matters less than whether it can be found: agents check the reference, not the price.
- Departure inside the permitted stay, ideally with a margin of a few days.
- Departure from a city you will plausibly be in.
- Reference that resolves on the airline's website.
