Onward ticket for the Dominican Republic

Short answer

Yes, and the airline enforces it. The Dominican Ministry of Tourism says that since 28 April 2023 airlines must make sure every foreign passenger holds an air ticket to and from the Dominican Republic before boarding, and that failure can mean denial of entry. Its tourist entry list also includes a ticket into and out of the country, and GOV.UK warns visitors may be refused entry without proof of onward or return travel. The official word is ticket, so whether a held reservation satisfies the check-in agent is the airline's decision.

What proof of onward travel means here

Evidence that you will leave the Dominican Republic before your permitted stay ends, usually a flight out with a booking reference someone can look up. The full explanation, including what does and does not count, is in our proof of onward travel guide.

When you may be asked

  • At check-in before any flight to Punta Cana (PUJ), Santo Domingo (SDQ), Santiago (STI) or Puerto Plata (POP), where the airline is responsible for confirming that foreign passengers hold a round-trip air ticket.
  • At the immigration desk on arrival, where GOV.UK says officers take fingerprints and a photo and can refuse entry to visitors without proof of onward or return travel.
  • At the airline counter, which needs to see the QR code from the mandatory E-Ticket entry and exit form before you check in.

Airline and check-in

  • Here the rule is written for the airline. The Ministry of Tourism says national and foreign carriers are responsible for strict compliance and face sanctions from the General Directorate of Migration if they get it wrong, so agents have every reason to be firm.
  • Dominican citizens and foreign residents of the Dominican Republic are exempt from the round-trip check, according to the Ministry of Tourism.
  • The rule speaks of a ticket to and from the Dominican Republic. A flight on to Miami or Panama City takes you out of the country just as a flight home does, but confirm with your airline if your exit does not return to where you started.
  • The Ministry of Tourism says the 20 US dollar departure tax is already included in the airline fare.

Why airlines check at all: do airlines check onward tickets?

The Dominican Republic: what to know

  • The Ministry of Tourism's entry list for tourists has four items: a passport, an air, sea or land ticket into and out of the country, an address in the Dominican Republic, and proof of enough money for the stay.
  • Until 31 December 2026, tourists from the EU, the UK, Canada, the United States, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Colombia and Ecuador only need a passport that stays valid for the whole visit. Other passports need 6 months of validity, per the Ministry of Tourism.
  • Most visitors, including those from the United States, Canada, the UK and the EU, need no visa. The Ministry of Tourism adds that anyone holding a valid US, Canadian, UK or Schengen visa, or legal residence there, can visit whatever their nationality; others apply through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • GOV.UK says British visitors get 30 days without a visa and can pay the immigration service to extend up to 120 days. The Ministry of Tourism says stays beyond 30 days carry a sliding-scale fee, paid online or at the airport when you leave.
  • The E-Ticket at eticket.migracion.gob.do is mandatory for every passenger on a commercial flight in or out. The Ministry of Tourism says it can be filled in as soon as you have flight details and must be done before the airline counter; GOV.UK describes a 7-day window, so completing it in the week before travel satisfies both.

What may count as proof

  • A flight out of the Dominican Republic in your name, which is what the airline has been told to look for before boarding.
  • The E-Ticket QR codes for arrival and departure, printed or saved as screenshots.
  • The address where you will stay and proof of funds, both on the Ministry of Tourism's entry list.
  • A passport that meets the validity rule for your nationality, which is relaxed for listed countries until 31 December 2026.

When to arrange it

Because the airline checks for the round trip before boarding, your departure booking has to exist when you check in, whether that is in Miami, Madrid or Toronto. If you are using a reservation rather than a ticket, ask your airline in advance whether it will accept one, and make sure it stays live through check-in and the arrival desk at PUJ or SDQ.

Common mistakes

  • Booking a one-way flight to Punta Cana and planning to sort the return later. Airlines are instructed to check for a round-trip ticket before boarding.
  • Turning up at the counter without the E-Ticket QR code. The Ministry of Tourism says the airline needs to see it.
  • Staying past 30 days without budgeting for the departure fee, which rises with the length of the stay.
  • Assuming a short-dated passport is fine for every nationality. The relaxed rule to 31 December 2026 covers listed countries only, and GOV.UK says the rules may change after that date.

The Dominican Republic questions

01Can I fly to the Dominican Republic one-way?

Foreign visitors should not count on it. The Ministry of Tourism says airlines must check that foreign passengers hold an air ticket to and from the Dominican Republic, and only Dominican citizens and foreign residents are exempt.

02Does the ticket out have to go back to my home country?

The rule describes a round trip to and from the Dominican Republic, and any flight leaving the country completes that. If your exit goes somewhere other than your origin, confirm with the airline before you fly; the onward ticket vs return ticket guide explains the difference.

03Will the airline accept a held reservation for the Dominican Republic?

The official wording is an air ticket, and the airline is the party sanctioned if it gets the check wrong, so it decides. A held reservation shows a dated departure with a reference the agent can look up while it is live, but some agents may insist on a ticketed booking. If you need certainty, ask your airline before you travel.

04What is the E-Ticket?

The free online entry and exit form of the General Directorate of Migration, at eticket.migracion.gob.do. Every passenger on a commercial flight completes it and shows the QR code to the airline. It does not replace the ticket out.
