What proof of onward travel means here
Evidence that you will leave Taiwan before your permitted stay ends, usually a flight out with a booking reference someone can look up. The full explanation, including what does and does not count, is in our proof of onward travel guide.
When you may be asked
- At check-in for a one-way flight to Taoyuan (TPE), Kaohsiung (KHH) or Songshan (TSA), where the airline can check the written conditions of visa-exempt entry, the ticket out among them.
- At the immigration counter, where BOCA says visitors can still be turned away if officers find them otherwise ineligible.
- On arrival with a Travel Authorization Certificate, which BOCA says must be presented with the required documents, with entry denied if they are not produced.
- When applying for a visitor visa at a Taiwan mission, where BOCA's checklist includes a return ticket.
Airline and check-in
- If you are not flying home, BOCA pairs the onward ticket with a visa for the next destination. When that country needs a visa, carry it with the booking.
- The rule mentions air or sea tickets, so a ferry booking counts on paper, but a flight matches the separate wording about a confirmed seat on the departure flight more closely.
- Hong Kong, Manila, Seoul and Tokyo are short flights from Taipei and Kaohsiung, which keeps an onward booking simple to date.
Why airlines check at all: do airlines check onward tickets?
Taiwan: what to know
- BOCA grants 90 days visa-free to nationals of the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and most of Europe, 30 days to Malaysia and Singapore, and 14 days to Thailand, Brunei and the Philippines until 31 July 2027. The stay starts on the day after arrival.
- Visa-exempt stays cannot normally be extended, but BOCA says British and Canadian passport holders can extend from 90 up to 180 days.
- BOCA requires at least six months of passport validity on entry, while US and Japanese nationals only need a passport valid for the intended stay. Only British Citizen passports qualify among UK passports.
- Thai, Philippine and Bruneian visitors must also show a hotel booking, a host or sponsor's contact details and enough money for the trip.
- Nationals of Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines and Vietnam who hold a qualifying visa or residence from countries such as the US, the UK, Japan or a Schengen state can apply online for a Travel Authorization Certificate, valid for 90 days with stays of 30 days.
- BOCA asks visitors to complete the online arrival card on the National Immigration Agency site within seven days before arrival. GOV.UK gives British travellers a three-day window, so filing it in the last three days satisfies both.
What may count as proof
- A confirmed return ticket, or an onward ticket plus any visa your next country needs, with a confirmed seat on the departure flight.
- For Thai, Philippine and Bruneian passports: the hotel booking, host contact details and proof of funds.
- For Travel Authorization Certificate holders: the printed certificate and the visa or residence card it relies on.
- For visitor visa applicants: the bank statement, itinerary and return ticket, e-ticket or travel agency proof on BOCA's checklist.
Reservation or paid ticket
| Reservation (hold) | Paid ticket | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A seat held in the airline's system, unpaid | A paid fare with an e-ticket number |
| Booking reference | Yes, verifiable on the airline's site | Yes |
| Can you board with it | No, unless you pay the airline before the deadline | Yes |
| How long it lasts | Until the airline's payment deadline, often hours to a few days | Until the flight |
| If you do not use it | The airline releases the seats automatically | Refund depends on the fare rules |

When to arrange it
BOCA counts the visa-exempt stay from the day after arrival, so date the departure inside 90, 30 or 14 days depending on your passport. The seat should be confirmed at check-in and still live at the immigration counter. If you are applying for a Travel Authorization Certificate, hold the ticket before you apply, because having one is a basic eligibility condition.
Common mistakes
- Booking the onward flight to a country whose visa you do not have. BOCA's wording pairs an onward ticket with a visa for the next destination.
- Planning to extend a visa-exempt stay on arrival. BOCA says only British and Canadian passport holders can.
- Travelling on an emergency or temporary passport. BOCA says visa-exempt entry needs a formal passport, with an exception for US nationals.
- Forgetting the online arrival card before the flight.
- Treating a Travel Authorization Certificate as a visa. It still depends on the onward ticket and the supporting documents at the border.
Taiwan questions
01Does Taiwan require an onward ticket?
Yes for visa-exempt visitors. BOCA lists a confirmed return ticket, or an onward ticket with a visa for the next destination, and a confirmed departure seat among the requirements.
02Can my onward flight from Taiwan go to a third country?
Yes, as long as you also hold any visa that country requires. BOCA's wording is a ticket and a visa for the next destination.
03Does a held reservation count as a confirmed seat reservation?
BOCA does not define the term. A held booking shows a confirmed seat with a reference the airline can look up while the hold is live, and the immigration officer decides. See what is proof of onward travel for the documents travellers usually show.
04How long can I stay in Taiwan without a visa?
90 days for most Western passports, 30 days for Malaysia and Singapore, and 14 days for Thailand, Brunei and the Philippines, counted from the day after arrival. Only British and Canadian passport holders can extend, up to 180 days.
