Flight reservation for a visa application: what embassies want and how to provide it

The itinerary supports the rest of your application: that your trip has an end date inside the visa validity you are asking for, that the route matches the purpose of travel, and that the dates line up with your hotel booking and leave from work. Consular staff sometimes verify the booking reference, so an editable document or a mocked-up itinerary is a real risk to the application.
What the document must show
A reservation document for a visa should carry the passenger name exactly as printed in the passport, the outbound and return or onward flight numbers with dates and times, the airline, and the booking reference. It should look like an itinerary from an agency or airline, and it should be verifiable. - Booking reference (PNR) that resolves on the airline's website.

Return versus onward
Schengen and many other visas expect a return to your country of residence. Others, including most visa-on-arrival and visa-exempt entries, accept an onward flight to any third country. Read the checklist for your consulate: if it says round trip, hold a return; if it says onward or return, a short onward hop is enough.
Timing the reservation
Holds expire on the airline's schedule, typically within hours to a few days, so create the reservation on the day you submit the application or upload the documents. For an in-person appointment, order the evening before or that morning. If the consulate asks for an updated itinerary later, order again for the new dates.
After approval
Once the visa is granted, buy the ticket you actually want. The held reservation lapses by itself at the airline's deadline; there is nothing to cancel and nothing further to pay. If you decide to keep the held flight, the airline's Manage booking page lets you pay for it before the deadline.
