What proof of onward travel means here
Evidence that you will leave Philippines before your permitted stay ends, usually a flight out with a booking reference someone can look up. The full explanation, including what does and does not count, is in our proof of onward travel guide.
When you may be asked
- At check-in anywhere in the world for a one-way flight to Manila (MNL), Cebu (CEB) or Clark (CRK).
- At the Bureau of Immigration counter, where the Berlin embassy says visa-free travellers must be able to present the outbound ticket at the border.
- When applying for a 9(a) tourist e-Visa, which lists tickets or a flight reservation covering entry and exit.
- At boarding, when the eTravel QR code is checked. The Berlin embassy says travellers present it before the flight.
Airline and check-in
- Philippine immigration will not admit travellers with incomplete documentation, according to the Berlin embassy, so check-in staff flying you in have a clear reason to look for the exit.
- Connecting through Hong Kong, Singapore or Seoul on separate tickets means the transfer desk can ask again. Keep the booking reference and PDF on your phone.
- Domestic hops inside the Philippines do not count as leaving. The exit the officer wants is an international departure.

Philippines: what to know
- The DFA ties visa-free entry under Executive Order No. 408 to a passport valid at least six months beyond the contemplated stay and a return or outward-bound ticket, on the eVisaPH policy page.
- Stay length depends on nationality. The Berlin embassy lists periods of 59, 30, 14 or 7 days or less, with 30 days for most visa-free countries and up to 14 days for Hong Kong and Macau SAR passports.
- To stay longer than the visa-free period, the Berlin embassy tells German travellers to apply for a Temporary Visitor's Visa before the flight.
- The 9(a-2) tourism e-Visa lists tickets or a flight reservation for entry and exit, an itinerary, accommodation and bank statements. The DFA says an e-Visa does not guarantee admission and cannot be extended.
- eTravel registration is free, and the Berlin embassy says the QR code is presented before boarding.
- Minors under 15 travelling without a parent need a Waiver of Exclusion Ground, according to the Berlin embassy.
What may count as proof
- An outbound flight dated inside your permitted stay, with a booking reference the airline can open.
- For an e-Visa application, a flight reservation covering entry and exit, which the DFA lists by name.
- Your eTravel QR code.
- A passport valid at least six months beyond your stay.

How to check one yourself: verify a flight reservation.
When to arrange it
The exit needs to exist before you check in for the flight to the Philippines, and the Berlin embassy frames it as a ticket within the visa-free period. Schedule the reservation for the day before departure and register on eTravel before you travel.
Common mistakes
- Holding an exit dated after your visa-free period, which is 30 days for most nationalities. The embassy wording is an outbound ticket within that period.
- Treating the eTravel QR code as the entry requirement. It is a registration; the ticket is checked separately.
- Showing only a later flight home from another country. The officer is looking for your departure from the Philippines.
- Presenting a reservation after its payment deadline. A lapsed booking looks like no ticket when the agent searches for it.

Yes for visa-free visitors. The DFA lists a return ticket or an outward-bound ticket to your next destination as a condition of visa-free entry. Airlines and Bureau of Immigration officers can both check it.
02Is a flight reservation enough for the Philippine e-Visa?
The 9(a-2) tourism e-Visa lists tickets or a flight reservation covering entry and exit. That is the application stage; on arrival the immigration officer still decides on admission.
03Can the onward flight go to any country?
Yes. The DFA wording is an outward-bound ticket to your next country of destination, so it does not have to be your home country. Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur are short hops from Manila.
