Philippines
Onward ticket for the Philippines
The Philippines is stricter than most of the region: visa-free entry rules explicitly refer to a return or onward ticket, and airlines flying into Manila, Cebu and Clark are known for enforcing it at check-in. Travellers on one-way tickets are regularly denied boarding without one.
01Why you're asked
Why proof of onward travel comes up.
- Airlines can be fined and made responsible for return transport if they carry a passenger who is refused entry, so check-in staff often ask for evidence you can leave the country before they let you board a one-way ticket.
- Visa-exempt and visa-on-arrival entries are granted on the basis that you will leave within the permitted stay. Immigration officers may ask how and when you intend to do so.
- Embassies and e-visa portals frequently request a flight itinerary while advising applicants not to buy non-refundable tickets before a decision is made.
02Practical notes
Travelling to Philippines
- 01The Bureau of Immigration publishes visa-free conditions for many nationalities that mention a valid onward or return ticket. Read the current text for your passport.
- 02Most check-in agents want to see a booking reference they can look up. Our reservation carries a real airline PNR that can be verified on the carrier's site while it is held.
- 03Manila has multiple terminals; if you are asked for an onward flight at immigration, the airport you leave from does not have to match the terminal you arrived at.
Typical onward routes
- MNL → SINSingapore
- MNL → KULKuala Lumpur
- MNL → HKGHong Kong
- MNL → BKKBangkok
- MNL → TPETaipei

03FAQ
Philippines questions
01Will the airline verify my reservation?
They can. The booking reference belongs to a live airline PNR while it is held, so a lookup on the airline's website will show the itinerary until the payment deadline passes.
Entry rules change. This page describes common practice, not legal advice; confirm current requirements with the official immigration authority or embassy for your nationality. Acceptance of any reservation is decided by the airline, border authority or embassy.
