AirAsia: onward ticket checks

Short answer

Yes, on international routes. AirAsia's conditions of carriage for AK, QZ and Z2 flights list a confirmed onward or return booking, where applicable, among the documents for international travel, and the FD and XJ conditions say passengers shall hold a return or onward journey ticket. Staff can refuse carriage when your documents do not appear to meet the destination's rules, and whether a held reservation is accepted is the agent's call and, on arrival, the immigration officer's.

What AirAsia's conditions of carriage say

AirAsia publishes a separate set of conditions for each airline in the group, named by the two-character code at the start of the flight number. The documents clause is worded in two ways, and the code on your booking tells you which version applies to you.

Onward travel wording in the documents clause, international routes
Flight codeClauseWhat it asks for
AK7.8 Documents Advisory (terms as of 31 August 2026)Valid original passports, valid visas and a confirmed onward or return booking, where applicable, while meeting the entry requirements of the final destination.
QZDocuments Advisory (terms as of 31 August 2026)A passport valid at least six months, valid visas and a confirmed onward or return booking, where applicable.
Z27.5 Documents AdvisoryThe AK wording again: a confirmed onward or return booking, where applicable.
FD6.6 Documents Advisory (last update 27 October 2026)A passport valid at least six months, the applicable visas, and a return or onward journey ticket, with no where-applicable qualifier.
XJ6.6 Documents AdvisoryThe FD wording: international passengers shall possess a return or onward journey ticket.

When AirAsia can refuse to fly you

Clause 7.7 of the AK terms reserves the right to refuse carriage to anyone who has not complied with the entry and exit rules of the countries on the route, or whose documents do not appear to comply. Clause 8.1 lists a passenger without the proper documents for travel among the grounds for refusal, and adds that damaged travel documents are not accepted.

Refusal at the counter is not the only cost. If a government orders AirAsia to fly you back because you were inadmissible, clause 7.9 makes you pay the fare and any penalties or fines, and clause 7.10 lets AirAsia recover fines and detention costs from you on demand. The FD terms say the fare is not refunded in that situation (clause 6.7).

Changing planes can bring a third country into play. The AK terms warn that at some transit airports passengers need immigration clearance to collect baggage and check in again, and that holding any visa needed for that transit is the passenger's job. The FD terms add that passengers who bought the FLY-THRU product are responsible for meeting the entry requirements of their final destination.

Before you check in with AirAsia

  2. 02Match the exit to the destinationDate the onward flight inside the stay you are allowed and make sure it leaves the country. A domestic hop within Thailand, Indonesia or the Philippines does not.
  3. 03Keep the reference to handAgents open a booking by its reference and family name, so save the airline, the reference and the itinerary offline. How to verify a flight reservation shows what they see.
  4. 04Know when only a paid ticket will doThailand's visa on arrival asks for fully paid onward tickets. A reservation is unpaid, so in that case buy a fare you can change or refund.

FlyProof is an independent service with no connection to AirAsia. It creates a real airline reservation with a booking reference that can be looked up, which fits destinations that ask for proof of onward travel; acceptance stays with the AirAsia agent and the immigration officer.

Questions

Does AirAsia check for an onward ticket?

It can. The documents clause in its conditions of carriage lists an onward or return booking (AK, QZ, Z2) or ticket (FD, XJ) for international routes, and staff may refuse carriage when documents do not appear to comply. Whether you are asked depends on the agent and on your destination's rules.

Does the onward flight have to be with AirAsia?

No. None of the AirAsia terms we read require the onward or return booking to be on AirAsia. What matters is that it leaves the destination country inside your permitted stay.

Is a reservation enough for AirAsia check-in?

On AK, QZ and Z2 flights the wording is a confirmed booking, which a live reservation with a reference is meant to show, though the agent decides. FD and XJ say ticket, and Thailand's visa on arrival asks for a fully paid one, so there a reservation can be refused.

What happens if I am refused entry after an AirAsia flight?

You pay. The AK terms charge the fare and any fines when immigration orders AirAsia to return you, and the FD terms add that the fare you paid is not refunded.
