Thai Airways: onward ticket checks
Short answer
Thai Airways' conditions of carriage make you responsible for the documents every country on your trip requires and let the airline refuse carriage if they do not appear to be in order. Flying into Thailand, that means Thailand's rule: from 15 September 2026 visa-exempt tourists can stay up to 30 days and, according to the Royal Thai Embassy in London, must show proof of onward travel scheduled within 30 days of arrival. The visa on arrival requires fully paid onward tickets.
What THAI's conditions of carriage say
- Article 13.1.1: you must obtain all required travel documents and visas and comply with the travel requirements of the countries you fly from, into or through.
- Article 13.2: before travel you present all exit, entry, health and other documents and allow THAI to copy them, and THAI reserves the right to refuse carriage if you have not complied or your documents do not appear to be in order.
- Article 7.1.7: carriage may also be refused if you do not appear to have valid travel documents, or may try to enter a transit country you lack documents for.
- Article 13.3: if a country refuses you entry, you pay any fine or charge it assesses against THAI and the cost of transporting you from that country, and the fare to the point of refusal is not refunded.
The conditions name no onward-ticket rule of their own. The version we read is the general conditions document published on thaiairways.com, reference BKKS9/V.1.
Flying into Thailand
| How you enter | Stay | What the embassy lists about leaving |
|---|---|---|
| Visa exemption, tourism | Up to 30 days from 15 September 2026 | Proof of onward travel scheduled within 30 days of arrival, plus proof of accommodation. Officers may ask for funds of 20,000 THB per person. |
| Visa on arrival, tourism | Up to 15 days | Fully paid onward travel tickets scheduled within 15 days of entry, and funds of 10,000 THB per person or 20,000 THB per family. |
For the visa exemption the embassy says proof of onward travel without defining it further. An international departure from Thailand dated within 30 days is the version least open to argument at a Bangkok counter, and the Thailand page has the rest of the entry rules.
Return tickets and no-shows
A THAI return ticket is itself proof that you will leave. Article 5.6 warns that if you do not show up for a flight without telling THAI in advance, it may cancel your return or onward reservations; if you do advise THAI beforehand, it says it will not cancel the later flights.
Skipping a sector without a call can therefore cancel the exit you were counting on. Contact THAI first, then check the booking still shows the return flight before you reach immigration.
One way to Bangkok: what to have ready
- 01Pick your entry routeVisa exemption or visa on arrival decides whether a reservation can work or a paid ticket is needed.
- 02Date the exitWithin 30 days of arrival on the exemption, within 15 days of entry on visa on arrival.
- 03Carry accommodation and funds evidenceThe embassy lists proof of accommodation for the exemption and says officers may ask about funds.
FlyProof has no affiliation with Thai Airways. It books a real reservation out of Thailand with a reference that can be verified, meant as proof of onward travel for the visa exemption; THAI's agent and the immigration officer make the call.
Questions
Does Thai Airways require an onward ticket to Bangkok?
THAI's conditions require the documents Thailand asks for and allow refusal if they do not appear to be in order. For visa-exempt tourists, the embassy lists proof of onward travel within 30 days of arrival.
Can my onward flight be a domestic flight to Phuket or Chiang Mai?
The embassy's wording does not spell out the destination. A domestic flight keeps you in Thailand, so choose an international departure if you want proof that is hard to dispute.
Is a reservation enough for Thailand's visa on arrival?
No. The embassy asks for fully paid onward travel tickets within 15 days of entry.
What if I am refused entry after a THAI flight?
Article 13.3 makes you pay any fine charged to THAI and the cost of flying you out, and THAI does not refund the fare to the point of refusal.
