What proof of onward travel means here
Evidence that you will leave Australia before your permitted stay ends, usually a flight out with a booking reference someone can look up. The full explanation, including what does and does not count, is in our proof of onward travel guide.
When you may be asked
- At check-in for flights to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth, where the airline confirms your ETA, eVisitor or visa before issuing a boarding pass and may ask about a one-way booking.
- On arrival, where the ETA page says visitors who stay for long periods or visit often may be asked about their travel purpose.
- In a Visitor visa application, where Home Affairs guidance on evidence mentions funds for your stay and for a fare out of Australia.
Airline and check-in
- Australia does not issue visas on arrival, so the airline's electronic check of your ETA or visa is the gate that matters; an onward ticket cannot replace it.
- Trans-Tasman flights to Auckland and Christchurch and short hops to Bali or Singapore are the usual onward legs from Australian airports.
- Travellers finishing in Western Australia often leave from Perth to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Bali rather than flying back east first.
Why airlines check at all: do airlines check onward tickets?
Australia: what to know
- The ETA (subclass 601) is for eligible passports including the United States, Canada, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and the UK. It must be requested through the Australian ETA app for a AUD20 service charge and allows stays of up to 3 months at a time over 12 months.
- The eVisitor (subclass 651) is free, covers EU and several other European passports including the UK, and allows up to 3 months per visit. It requires enough money to support yourself and to leave Australia at the end of your stay.
- The Visitor visa (subclass 600) Tourist stream from outside Australia usually grants 3 months and can grant up to 12. Home Affairs says not to arrange travel until you are told in writing that the visa is granted.
- Home Affairs' evidence guidance mentions funds of approximately AUD5000 for personal support plus enough to buy a return or onward ticket, in addition to the support funds.
- Home Affairs says a visitor found not to be genuine can have an ETA cancelled, and every arriving passenger completes an Incoming Passenger Card.
What may count as proof
- Your ETA, eVisitor or visa grant, linked to the passport you travel on.
- Evidence of funds for the stay and for a fare out of Australia, such as bank statements.
- An onward or return booking that shows the airline or an officer your departure date.
- Accommodation details and a rough plan for questions on arrival.
Reservation or paid ticket
| Reservation (hold) | Paid ticket | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A seat held in the airline's system, unpaid | A paid fare with an e-ticket number |
| Booking reference | Yes, verifiable on the airline's site | Yes |
| Can you board with it | No, unless you pay the airline before the deadline | Yes |
| How long it lasts | Until the airline's payment deadline, often hours to a few days | Until the flight |
| If you do not use it | The airline releases the seats automatically | Refund depends on the fare rules |
How to check one yourself: verify a flight reservation.
When to arrange it
Get the ETA or eVisitor granted first, since Home Affairs advises against making travel arrangements before the grant. Then create the onward hold to be live at check-in and on arrival, allowing for long journeys: a trip from Europe can take a day or more to reach Perth or Sydney, so schedule the hold close to the final leg.
Common mistakes
- Applying for an ETA through an unofficial website instead of the Australian ETA app.
- Assuming the ETA gives 12 months in one go. Each stay is up to 3 months within the 12-month validity.
- Offering a reservation as evidence of funds for a Visitor visa. Home Affairs asks for money to buy a fare, and a reservation does not show funds.
- Booking an Australian departure more than 3 months after arrival on an ETA or eVisitor.
Australia questions
01Do I need an onward ticket for Australia?
Home Affairs does not list one among the criteria for the ETA, eVisitor or Visitor visa. You must be a genuine visitor with funds to support yourself, and for the eVisitor to leave, so a departure booking helps if an airline or officer asks.
02Can I book a one-way flight before my ETA or eVisitor is granted?
You can, but Home Affairs suggests not making travel arrangements until the ETA is granted and tells eVisitor and Visitor visa applicants the same. Book after the grant, then add an onward reservation.
03Is a flight to New Zealand fine as onward travel from Australia?
Yes, any international departure shows you leaving Australia. New Zealand has its own paid onward ticket rule for visitors, explained on our New Zealand page.
