What proof of onward travel means here
Evidence that you will leave Costa Rica before your permitted stay ends, usually a flight out with a booking reference someone can look up. The full explanation, including what does and does not count, is in our proof of onward travel guide.
When you may be asked
- At check-in for flights into San José (SJO) or Liberia (LIR), where the agent compares a one-way itinerary with Costa Rica's exit-ticket rule before printing a boarding pass.
- At the immigration desk on arrival, where the officer decides how many days to grant and can ask how and when you will leave Costa Rica.
- At the land crossings from Nicaragua and Panama: the embassy wording covers exits by land as well as by air, so arriving by bus does not remove the question.
- At a Costa Rican consulate if your passport needs a visa, where the embassy in Bogotá lists a flight itinerary or reservation in your name among the application documents.
Airline and check-in
- Many travellers arrive on one-way fares from the United States, Panama City or Bogotá. If yours is one-way, expect the check-in agent to ask for the exit booking reference rather than accept a spoken plan.
- The embassy accepts an exit by land, but an airline agent is not bound by that wording and may prefer a flight it can look up. A bus ticket to Managua or Panama City plus a flight reservation covers both preferences.
- Liberia (LIR) serves Guanacaste and has a smaller route network than San José. If an onward hold from LIR is hard to find, a departure from SJO still shows you leaving Costa Rica.
Why airlines check at all: do airlines check onward tickets?
Costa Rica: what to know
- The embassy of Costa Rica in Mexico answers the one-way question directly: no, visitors need an entry ticket and an exit ticket, by air or land as the case may be.
- GOV.UK says British passport holders can visit without a visa for up to 180 days under a tourist visa waiver, with the exact period decided by the immigration officer on arrival. Other passports fall into different groups under the DGME visa directives, so check yours with a Costa Rican embassy.
- According to the embassy in Bogotá's summary of the visa directives, some nationals who normally need a consular visa can enter without one if they hold a qualifying multiple-entry visa or residence from the United States or Canada, a multiple-entry Schengen visa, or residence in the UK, the EU, Iceland, Norway or Switzerland. Minimum remaining validity applies, so read the exact conditions.
- The same embassy tells visa applicants to submit an itinerary or flight reservation in their name, not to buy the tickets, and to keep the reservation within the maximum permitted stay. For land journeys it asks for bus reservations with entry and exit dates.
- GOV.UK notes a departure tax of 29 US dollars when leaving by air, which most airlines include in the fare.
What may count as proof
- A flight booking leaving Costa Rica, in the same name as your passport and dated inside the days you expect to be granted.
- A bus booking to Nicaragua or Panama, which fits the embassy's air or land wording, although some airlines prefer to see a flight.
- For consular visa applicants: the flight reservation, a hotel booking or invitation letter and proof of economic means, which the embassy in Bogotá lists for entry.
- A booking reference the airline can open under Manage booking, such as the PNR on a FlyProof reservation, with a PDF copy in case you have no signal at the counter.
Reservation or paid ticket
| Reservation (hold) | Paid ticket | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A seat held in the airline's system, unpaid | A paid fare with an e-ticket number |
| Booking reference | Yes, verifiable on the airline's site | Yes |
| Can you board with it | No, unless you pay the airline before the deadline | Yes |
| How long it lasts | Until the airline's payment deadline, often hours to a few days | Until the flight |
| If you do not use it | The airline releases the seats automatically | Refund depends on the fare rules |

When to arrange it
Create the Costa Rica onward reservation so it is live at check-in and still live at the SJO or LIR immigration desk. For an early morning departure, schedule the hold for the evening before so it has not lapsed by the time you land. Visa applicants should time it for the consulate appointment instead, since the embassy in Bogotá asks for a reservation rather than a purchased ticket and often answers the same day.
Common mistakes
- Dating the exit after the end of your likely stay. The officer can grant fewer days than the maximum for your passport, so keep the departure well inside it.
- Carrying an unnamed bus ticket bought at a terminal with no date on it. A booking that shows your name, route and departure date is far easier for an agent or officer to accept.
- Letting the hold lapse on a long travel day with a connection in the United States or Panama. Check the expiry time on the pass before you leave home.
- Assuming a US or Schengen visa exempts you automatically. The embassy's summary sets conditions such as multiple entries and remaining validity.
Costa Rica questions
01Can I enter Costa Rica on a one-way ticket?
The embassy in Mexico says no: visitors are expected to arrive with an entry ticket and an exit ticket. In practice the airline is likely to stop you before boarding if it cannot see a way out, so arrange an exit booking first. Our guide to an onward ticket for a one-way flight covers the options.
02Does a bus ticket to Panama or Nicaragua count as proof of onward travel?
The embassy wording accepts an exit by air or by land, and the embassy in Bogotá mentions bus reservations for overland trips. Airline agents may still want a flight they can verify, so carry the bus booking and consider a flight reservation as a back-up.
03How long will Costa Rica let me stay?
It depends on your passport and on the officer. GOV.UK says British visitors can be given up to 180 days at the officer's discretion, and other nationalities have their own limits. Date the onward booking inside the period you expect, not at the maximum.
04Is a held reservation accepted for a Costa Rica consular visa?
The embassy in Bogotá asks for an itinerary or flight reservation in the applicant's name and says not to buy the tickets. A held reservation fits that description while it is live; the consulate decides whether the file is sufficient.
