Onward ticket for Indonesia and Bali

Short answer

Yes, for most visitors. Indonesia's Directorate General of Immigration lists a return ticket, or a ticket to continue to another country, as a requirement for the visa on arrival, the e-VoA and visa-free visits, and the official e-Visa site tells VoA holders to show an outbound ticket to the officer. A reservation with a live booking reference is what many travellers carry into Bali and Jakarta, but the wording is ticket, so an officer or airline can ask for a paid one.

What proof of onward travel means here

Evidence that you will leave Indonesia before your permitted stay ends, usually a flight out with a booking reference someone can look up. The full explanation, including what does and does not count, is in our proof of onward travel guide.

When you may be asked

  • At check-in for a one-way flight to Denpasar (DPS) or Jakarta (CGK), since the airline has to judge whether you meet the VoA or visa-free conditions.
  • At passport control, where the e-Visa site says VoA holders present a passport valid for at least 6 months and an outbound ticket from Indonesia.
  • At the VoA counter in the arrival hall if you buy the visa there rather than as an e-VoA online.
  • In Lombok and Surabaya as much as in Bali. The requirement comes from national immigration rules, not from one airport.

Airline and check-in

  • If you booked Bali one-way from Australia, Europe or the Gulf, the check-in agent may look for an exit dated inside your permitted stay before printing a boarding pass.
  • A VoA or e-VoA does not remove the ticket question. The immigration department lists the return or onward ticket as a requirement of the visa itself.
  • The requirement reads return ticket or ticket onward to another country, not specifically a flight. A ferry to Singapore can meet that wording, but the check-in agent decides what they accept.

Why airlines check at all: do airlines check onward tickets?

Indonesia: what to know

  • Visa on arrival: a stay of up to 30 days, extendable for another 30 days, at a cost of Rp500.000, according to the official e-Visa site. You can get it online as an e-VoA before travel or at the counter at certain checkpoints.
  • Both the e-VoA and the counter VoA list a return ticket, or a ticket to continue to another country, as a requirement in the immigration department FAQ.
  • Visa-free visits, for passports on Indonesia's visa-free list, carry the same condition: a passport valid for at least 6 months and a return or onward ticket.
  • All Indonesia is the immigration department's arrival card portal. It asks for personal, trip, transport and address details and a declaration before you enter.
  • Online visas are applied for at evisa.imigrasi.go.id with a passport biodata page, a photo, an email address and a payment card.

What may count as proof

  • A flight out of Indonesia with a booking reference, dated within your permitted stay.
  • A sea crossing to another country, such as a ferry to Singapore, which fits the stated wording.
  • Your e-VoA approval, or a card or cash for the counter VoA.
  • Your All Indonesia arrival card confirmation.

When to arrange it

Have the onward booking ready before you check in for the flight to Indonesia, dated within the 30 days a VoA gives. Complete the All Indonesia arrival card shortly before you fly, following the window the portal shows.

Common mistakes

  • Dating the exit after day 30 because you plan to extend the VoA. The extension is not granted yet, so an exit outside the initial stay may prompt questions.
  • Buying a VoA through an unofficial website. The immigration department points to evisa.imigrasi.go.id for online visas.
  • Assuming the arrival card replaces onward proof. The card and the ticket are separate checks.
  • Letting the reservation lapse during a long layover in Singapore or Kuala Lumpur before the Bali leg.

Indonesia questions

01Do I need a return ticket for the Indonesia visa on arrival?

The immigration department lists a return ticket, or a ticket to continue to another country, as a VoA and e-VoA requirement, and the e-Visa site tells arrivals to present an outbound ticket. A verifiable reservation shows a dated exit, but the officer decides whether it is enough.

02Is Bali stricter than the rest of Indonesia?

The ticket requirement in the immigration FAQ is not specific to Bali; it applies wherever you enter. Bali is simply where many visitors arrive, so it is where the question comes up most often.

03Can my onward ticket be a ferry to Singapore?

The immigration FAQ asks for a return ticket or a ticket to continue to another country, so a ferry ticket fits the words. Whether the check-in agent accepts it before your flight in is their call.

04What is the All Indonesia arrival card?

It is the immigration department's online arrival card, completed before you enter Indonesia. It collects passport, trip, transport and address details. It is separate from the visa and from onward proof. See how airlines check onward tickets for the other check.
