What proof of onward travel means here
Evidence that you will leave Japan before your permitted stay ends, usually a flight out with a booking reference someone can look up. The full explanation, including what does and does not count, is in our proof of onward travel guide.
When you may be asked
- At check-in for a one-way flight to Tokyo (HND or NRT), Osaka (KIX), Fukuoka (FUK) or Sapporo (CTS).
- At the landing examination, where permission to enter stays at the immigration officer's discretion even under a visa exemption, according to the Embassy of Japan in the UK.
- When plans are open-ended. The Seattle consulate answers exactly this case: a traveller unsure how long they will stay still needs a ticket out within 90 days.
Airline and check-in
- JAPAN eVISA holders must display the Visa issuance notice online at the airport. MOFA says PDFs, screenshots and printed copies are not accepted, so make sure your phone has data at check-in.
- Airline payment deadlines vary by route. Compare the validity on your pass with your check-in time, especially for long flights from Europe or North America with early departures.
- A ferry to Busan is a real exit from Japan, but check-in staff flying you in can confirm a flight booking reference more easily than a ferry voucher.
Why airlines check at all: do airlines check onward tickets?
Japan: what to know
- Japan has visa exemption arrangements with 74 countries and regions. Stays granted on landing are 90 days for most, 30 days for Brunei and Qatar, and 15 days for Indonesia and Thailand, according to MOFA.
- Some exemptions apply only to ICAO-compliant ePassports or to passports registered with a Japanese mission, including those of Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the UAE, Brazil and Qatar.
- Nationals of the UK, Ireland, Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein, Mexico and Switzerland are given up to 90 days on arrival and can apply to an immigration office for an extension, per the Embassy of Japan in the UK.
- The JAPAN eVISA covers single-entry tourism stays of up to 90 days for residents of listed countries, including Australia, Canada, the UK and the USA, who are not already visa-exempt.
- Visit Japan Web, run by the Digital Agency, lets you register immigration and customs information in advance and show a 2D code on arrival.
What may count as proof
- A return or onward ticket leaving Japan within your permitted stay, which is 90 days for most visa-exempt visitors.
- Evidence of funds and, where relevant, host details, which the London embassy suggests carrying.
- Your Visit Japan Web 2D code on a phone or tablet.
- For eVISA holders: the online Visa issuance notice.
Reservation or paid ticket
| Reservation (hold) | Paid ticket | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A seat held in the airline's system, unpaid | A paid fare with an e-ticket number |
| Booking reference | Yes, verifiable on the airline's site | Yes |
| Can you board with it | No, unless you pay the airline before the deadline | Yes |
| How long it lasts | Until the airline's payment deadline, often hours to a few days | Until the flight |
| If you do not use it | The airline releases the seats automatically | Refund depends on the fare rules |
How to check one yourself: verify a flight reservation.
When to arrange it
Make sure the reservation is live at check-in and at the landing examination on arrival. Register on Visit Japan Web before you fly so the 2D code is ready.
Common mistakes
- Arriving with no exit because you have not decided how long to stay. The Seattle consulate says that is exactly when you still need a ticket out within 90 days.
- Showing a JAPAN eVISA as a screenshot or PDF. MOFA says only the online notice is accepted.
- Assuming every visa-exempt passport gets 90 days. Thailand and Indonesia get 15 days, and Brunei and Qatar 30.
- Holding an onward date beyond your permitted stay.
Japan questions
01Can I enter Japan with a one-way ticket?
The Consulate-General of Japan in Seattle says visa-exempt visitors are still required to have a return ticket or a ticket out within 90 days and could be refused entry without one. Plan to show a dated exit.
02Does the exit from Japan have to be a flight home?
No. The consulate's wording is a ticket for departing Japan to a different country. Seoul, Taipei and Hong Kong are common short hops from Tokyo and Osaka.
03Is a flight reservation accepted at the Japanese landing examination?
No official source we reviewed specifies the form the ticket must take. A reservation with a booking reference the officer can check shows a dated exit, and the officer decides. See onward tickets at the airport for how the check usually runs.
04What is Visit Japan Web?
A Digital Agency service for arrival procedures. You register immigration and customs details in advance and show a 2D code at the airport. It does not replace the need for a ticket out.
