Onward ticket for Mexico

Short answer

Not as a written condition of visa-free entry, but it is one of the first things you may be asked for. Mexico's immigration institute (INM) says officers checking the purpose of a visit will request documents such as hotel bookings, return tickets or tour tickets, and can ask how you will leave the country. GOV.UK gives British visitors the same warning. On a one-way fare, carry a verifiable departure booking and be ready to explain your plans.

What proof of onward travel means here

Evidence that you will leave Mexico before your permitted stay ends, usually a flight out with a booking reference someone can look up. The full explanation, including what does and does not count, is in our proof of onward travel guide.

When you may be asked

  • At the INM desk in Mexico City (MEX), Cancún (CUN) or Guadalajara (GDL), where the officer decides how many days you get and can ask for return or onward tickets to confirm why you are visiting.
  • At check-in for one-way flights to Mexico, particularly from the United States and Canada, where the airline wants to see how you will leave before it boards you.
  • At land entries from Guatemala or Belize, where INM requires the Forma Migratoria Múltiple and GOV.UK says British nationals must fill in the immigration form online.

Airline and check-in

  • Flights from the United States are short and often booked one-way by people continuing through Central America, which is exactly the itinerary agents query. Have the reference for the flight out of Mexico ready at the counter.
  • If you plan to leave by bus into Guatemala or Belize weeks later, the airline cannot check that. A flight reservation from Mexico City or Cancún gives the agent a departure it can look up.
  • Airport e-gates only speed up arrival for eligible tourists; they do not replace the airline's own check before you board, or the officer's right to ask questions.

Why airlines check at all: do airlines check onward tickets?

Mexico: what to know

  • INM's page for visa-exempt nationalities says that, to corroborate the reason for the trip, the immigration authority will request items such as a hotel reservation, return tickets and tour tickets, and can ask about your means of subsistence and the transport you will use to leave.
  • INM says a visitor cannot stay beyond 180 days without residence or a pending immigration procedure. The officer sets the actual number, and GOV.UK says it is stamped in your passport.
  • According to INM, travellers who normally need a Mexican visa can instead present a valid visa from the United States, Canada, Japan, the UK or a Schengen country, or permanent residence there or in Chile, Colombia or Peru.
  • At international airports no paper Forma Migratoria Múltiple is needed because the record is generated at entry. Land arrivals complete the FMM.
  • GOV.UK says tourists aged 18 or over can use e-gates at some main airports and must keep the printed e-gate ticket to show when leaving, and that digital proof of entry can be downloaded from the INM portal within the first 60 days.
  • Visitors to Quintana Roo, the state that includes Cancún, must pay a state entry tax and show proof of payment at the airport before leaving, according to GOV.UK.

What may count as proof

  • A return or onward flight booking with your name, route and date, which INM names as one of the documents an officer will request.
  • A hotel reservation, or an invitation letter from your host; GOV.UK says officers may ask for one if you stay in someone's home.
  • Evidence you can pay for the trip, such as a recent bank statement or card, since INM also checks means of subsistence.
  • Tour or activity bookings if your trip is built around them. INM lists tour tickets alongside return tickets as itinerary evidence.

When to arrange it

Have the onward flight held so it is live when you check in for Mexico and still live at the INM desk, which after a long-haul arrival into MEX can be many hours later. If you will cross into Guatemala or Belize weeks after landing, pick an onward date comfortably inside the days you expect rather than at the 180-day ceiling.

Common mistakes

  • Telling the INM officer you do not know how long you will stay. The officer writes the number of days, and a vague answer with no departure booking can mean fewer days than you wanted.
  • Forgetting the Quintana Roo entry tax receipt when flying home from Cancún.
  • Losing the stamp or e-gate ticket that shows your permitted days. GOV.UK says replacing an entry stamp means paying a fee at an immigration office.
  • Treating a US visa as automatic admission. INM accepts it in place of a Mexican visa for some nationalities, but the officer still checks the purpose of the trip.

Mexico questions

01Does Mexico require a return ticket?

INM does not list it as a stand-alone condition for visa-exempt visitors, but it says officers will request return tickets, hotel bookings or tour tickets to confirm why you are visiting. Treat it as something you should be able to show.

02Can my onward flight leave from a different Mexican city?

Yes. The officer cares whether and when you will leave Mexico, not which airport you use. A flight from Cancún to Guatemala City or from Mexico City to Bogotá shows that just as well as a flight home.

03How many days will I get in Mexico?

Up to 180, at the officer's discretion. GOV.UK says the number is stamped in your passport, or you can download digital proof of your permitted stay from the INM portal within the first 60 days.

04Will a held reservation work at the INM desk?

It shows a dated departure with a booking reference the airline can confirm while it is held. INM treats these documents as evidence of the purpose of your trip, and the officer decides what is enough. Our guide on how to verify a flight reservation explains what an officer can check.
