Onward ticket for New Zealand

Short answer

Yes, and New Zealand is stricter than most. Immigration New Zealand says visa waiver visitors must be able to show a ticket out of the country, that onward tickets must be paid for before travel, and that airlines may ask to see it at check-in. Visitor Visa applicants must show onward travel arrangements too. An unpaid held reservation does not meet that wording, so for New Zealand buy a paid ticket, ideally a refundable one.

Paid ticket expected

Immigration New Zealand says onward tickets must be paid for before travel. A held reservation may not be accepted, so buy a refundable or flexible ticket out if you are entering as a visitor.

What proof of onward travel means here

Evidence that you will leave New Zealand before your permitted stay ends, usually a flight out with a booking reference someone can look up. The full explanation, including what does and does not count, is in our proof of onward travel guide.

When you may be asked

  • At check-in, where Immigration New Zealand says airlines check your NZeTA against the passport you applied with and may also ask to see your ticket out of New Zealand.
  • At the border in Auckland or Christchurch, where INZ can decide to ask for travel tickets or evidence of onward travel and funds before granting the visa on arrival.
  • When applying for a Visitor Visa, where the INZ guide asks for evidence of onward travel arrangements.
  • If your next country also has an onward travel requirement, INZ says you may be asked to show the ticket out of that country as well.

Airline and check-in

  • Airlines flying to Auckland handle the NZeTA check and the onward ticket question together at the counter, so have both ready before you queue.
  • Frequent trans-Tasman flights make a refundable fare to Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane a practical paid exit if your plans are open.
  • Cruise passengers and private craft follow separate rules; INZ accepts a letter from the craft owner or a cruise itinerary as proof of departure.

Why airlines check at all: do airlines check onward tickets?

New Zealand: what to know

  • Visa waiver visitors, who need an NZeTA before travelling, can stay up to 3 months, or 6 months if from the United Kingdom, and INZ says the departure date must fall within that period.
  • INZ says visa waiver visitors must provide their ticket for travel out of New Zealand to a country they can enter, and that onward tickets must be paid for before travel.
  • The Visitor Visa Guide (INZ 1018) accepts actual tickets, confirmed or open-dated, written confirmation from an airline or travel agency that travel is booked and paid for, or a confirmed departure by yacht or private aircraft.
  • The same guide says visitor visa applicants must show tickets for travel out of New Zealand or the money to buy them.
  • INZ says Australian citizens travelling on an Australian passport need neither a visa nor an NZeTA, and that visa waiver visitors can spend up to 6 months in any 12-month period in New Zealand.
  • On arrival you complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration, which INZ describes as the way you apply for the visitor visa and entry permission.

What may count as proof

  • A paid ticket out of New Zealand to a country you are allowed to enter, which INZ names as the evidence for visa waiver visitors.
  • Written confirmation from an airline or travel agency that the onward journey is booked and paid, accepted in the Visitor Visa Guide.
  • Evidence of enough money for your stay in New Zealand.
  • A held reservation, such as a FlyProof reservation, shows a route and date but is not paid, so it may not satisfy INZ. Do not rely on it alone for New Zealand.

When to arrange it

Buy the paid ticket out before you fly to New Zealand, since INZ says it must be paid before travel. If your plans may change, a refundable or changeable fare to Australia keeps the cost of changing your mind low. Visitor Visa applicants should include the onward evidence with the application.

Common mistakes

  • Relying on an unpaid reservation for New Zealand. INZ says onward tickets must be paid for before you travel.
  • Booking the departure more than 3 months after arrival on a visa waiver, or more than 6 months for UK citizens.
  • Forgetting that a next stop with its own onward rule may mean showing that ticket too.
  • Travelling on a different passport from the one used to request the NZeTA.

New Zealand questions

01Does New Zealand require proof of onward travel?

Yes. INZ says visa waiver visitors must provide their ticket for travel out of New Zealand, and the Visitor Visa Guide requires evidence of onward travel arrangements.

02Is a flight reservation enough for New Zealand?

Not by INZ's wording. It says onward tickets must be paid for before travel, and its guide lists paid tickets or confirmation of a booked and paid trip. A held reservation is not paid, so for New Zealand buy a refundable ticket instead. Our guide on when to buy an onward ticket covers refundable options.

03Can the ticket out of New Zealand be open-dated?

The Visitor Visa Guide accepts actual travel tickets that are confirmed or open-dated, as long as they take you out of New Zealand to a country you can enter.

04Do Australians need an onward ticket for New Zealand?

INZ says Australian citizens travelling on an Australian passport need neither a visa nor an NZeTA. The onward ticket rule is written for visa waiver visitors, so check with INZ if you are unsure how it applies to you.
