What proof of onward travel means here
Evidence that you will leave Panama before your permitted stay ends, usually a flight out with a booking reference someone can look up. The full explanation, including what does and does not count, is in our proof of onward travel guide.
When you may be asked
- At check-in for a one-way flight to Panama City's Tocumen airport (PTY), where the airline can decline to board a passenger who cannot show how they will leave Panama.
- At the SNM counter at Tocumen, where the officer can work through the SNM list item by item: passport, funds of at least B/.500 and the exit reservation.
- At Paso Canoas and the other posts on the Costa Rican border. GOV.UK singles out overland arrivals from Costa Rica, by people who are not Costa Rican residents, as the case where a ticket out is most likely to be requested.
- On coming back after a few days in Costa Rica or Colombia. GOV.UK warns that officials may detain visitors who try to restart their stay this way, so expect closer questions about when you will leave.
Airline and check-in
- Tocumen is a major connecting airport for the Americas, and plenty of passengers fly in one-way meaning to carry on to Colombia, Costa Rica or the Caribbean. Have the reference for your PTY departure ready rather than an outline of your plans.
- An agent abroad has no way to check a plan to leave by bus over the Costa Rican border. A flight reservation out of PTY gives the counter something it can open, and you remain free to take the bus instead.
- GOV.UK says the 40 US dollar departure charge is usually built into the fare. If your exit is a separately bought ticket, check with that airline that it is covered.
Why airlines check at all: do airlines check onward tickets?
Panama: what to know
- The SNM's entry list for visitors is short: a passport or travel document with at least 3 months of validity, proof of economic solvency for the declared stay of no less than B/.500, a verified reservation to leave Panama within the established period, and a visa where your nationality needs one.
- The SNM sets the solvency floor at B/.500 (the balboa trades at par with the US dollar) and exempts children under 18. GOV.UK tells British visitors to be ready to prove at least 1,000 US dollars or to show a credit card.
- GOV.UK says British visitors can stay up to 3 months without a visa when arriving by land or air, and cannot normally extend unless they apply to change their immigration status within those 3 months.
- The two sources differ on passports. The SNM asks for 3 months of validity, while GOV.UK tells British visitors their passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the day they plan to leave, with one blank page. Follow the stricter figure.
- Arrivals by sea follow different rules: GOV.UK says anyone arriving on a vessel that is not a cruise ship needs a visa, while cruise passengers and Canal transits do not for stays up to 3 months.
What may count as proof
- A reservation out of Panama in your name, dated inside the stay you expect. The SNM asks for a verified exit reservation, and GOV.UK speaks of a return or onward ticket.
- Proof of funds: at least B/.500 under the SNM rule, or the 1,000 US dollars or credit card that GOV.UK mentions for British visitors.
- The address and phone number of your accommodation, which GOV.UK says border officers may ask for.
- A booking reference the airline can look up, such as the PNR on a FlyProof reservation, plus a saved PDF in case the connection at the desk is poor.
Reservation or paid ticket
| Reservation (hold) | Paid ticket | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A seat held in the airline's system, unpaid | A paid fare with an e-ticket number |
| Booking reference | Yes, verifiable on the airline's site | Yes |
| Can you board with it | No, unless you pay the airline before the deadline | Yes |
| How long it lasts | Until the airline's payment deadline, often hours to a few days | Until the flight |
| If you do not use it | The airline releases the seats automatically | Refund depends on the fare rules |
How to check one yourself: verify a flight reservation.
When to arrange it
The SNM asks for an exit reservation within the established period, so date the departure inside the days you expect to be given rather than at the end of the 3-month maximum. Keep the hold live from check-in through the Tocumen immigration queue. If you are crossing from Costa Rica by bus, make sure it is live on the day you reach Paso Canoas.
Common mistakes
- Arriving at Paso Canoas with only a vague plan to fly home later. GOV.UK flags overland entry from Costa Rica as the one where a ticket out is most often requested.
- Bringing no way to prove funds. The SNM sets a floor of B/.500, and GOV.UK suggests British visitors be ready to show 1,000 US dollars or a credit card.
- Travelling on a passport with only 3 months left. That meets the SNM minimum, but GOV.UK asks British visitors for 6 months beyond the day they leave.
- Leaving for a neighbouring country and coming straight back to reset the clock. GOV.UK says officials may detain visitors who try it.
- Walking away from the desk without checking the stamp. GOV.UK asks visitors to make sure the passport shows the date they arrived.
Panama questions
01Does Panama require an onward ticket?
The SNM lists a verified reservation to leave the country within the permitted period as an entry requirement for visitors, so plan to show one. It sits alongside a passport and proof of funds, not instead of them.
02Can I show a bus ticket to Costa Rica as proof of onward travel?
The SNM asks for a reservation to leave the country and does not say it has to be a flight, so a dated bus booking in your name fits the wording. The airline that flies you in may still prefer a flight it can verify, and entering Costa Rica overland brings its own exit-ticket rule on the other side.
03How much money do I need to show in Panama?
The SNM sets the minimum at B/.500, in line with the stay you declare, and children under 18 are exempt. GOV.UK tells British visitors they may need to prove 1,000 US dollars or show a credit card. A card plus a recent bank statement covers both.
04Will a held reservation satisfy Panama's exit requirement?
The SNM's word is reservation, and a held booking with a reference the airline can confirm is one while it is live. The officer decides whether it is enough, so keep it dated within your expected stay. Our guide on how to verify a flight reservation shows what can be checked.
