Onward ticket for Peru

Short answer

For Peru the answer splits in two. The Foreign Ministry asks tourist visa applicants for a round-trip ticket or reservation and rejects price quotes, so visa holders should treat proof of travel out as required. For visa-free visitors, Migraciones' entry checklist lists a passport, a visa where needed and the virtual Andean migration card but no ticket, so the rule is unclear and the airline flying you to Lima may still ask.

What proof of onward travel means here

Evidence that you will leave Peru before your permitted stay ends, usually a flight out with a booking reference someone can look up. The full explanation, including what does and does not count, is in our proof of onward travel guide.

When you may be asked

  • At check-in for flights to Lima's Jorge Chávez airport, where the airline decides whether a one-way passenger can board.
  • At the Migraciones desk in Lima, where the officer records the days you are granted on the virtual Andean Migration Card (TAM).
  • When you apply online for a Peruvian tourist visa through the Foreign Ministry's e-SAMI system, which asks for the ticket or reservation up front.
  • At land borders with Bolivia, Chile or Ecuador on the way out, where you must register your exit with Migraciones or risk being unable to re-enter Peru or board a flight from Peruvian territory later.

Airline and check-in

  • Plenty of travellers fly into Lima one-way and plan to leave overland for Bolivia or Ecuador. The airline cannot verify a future bus trip, so a flight reservation out of Lima is easier for the agent to accept.
  • Lima has direct flights to Santiago, Bogotá, Quito, Buenos Aires and Panama City among many others, which makes a short onward hold from LIM straightforward.
  • If you only connect in Lima, GOV.UK says a TUUA airport fee now applies to transit and connecting passengers and is not currently included in tickets; that is separate from any onward-ticket check.

Why airlines check at all: do airlines check onward tickets?

Peru: what to know

  • Migraciones' page on entry control lists, for foreign visitors, a passport (or national ID for Andean Community and Mercosur citizens), a consular visa where applicable and the virtual TAM. It does not mention an onward ticket.
  • GOV.UK says British visitors normally get permission to stay up to 90 days in a 180-day period, and that officials can grant a maximum of 183 days in a 365-day period.
  • Airport arrivals are recorded digitally on the TAM rather than stamped, and Migraciones lets you download it to check your authorised stay.
  • The Foreign Ministry's tourist visa process runs online through e-SAMI and asks for a round-trip ticket or reservation to Peru, adding that quotes are not accepted, plus a hotel booking or invitation and proof of funds. Review can take up to 9 working days.
  • The Foreign Ministry publishes a table of visa exemptions by nationality, with a different permitted stay and extension rule for each agreement.
  • Migraciones says passports must be valid for at least six months, and that overstaying costs a daily fine of 0.1% of the UIT tax unit.

What may count as proof

  • For visa applicants: a round-trip ticket or flight reservation. The Foreign Ministry says quotes are not accepted, so it must be a real booking.
  • A departure booking dated inside the days you expect to be granted, to show the airline at check-in for Lima.
  • A passport with at least six months of validity, which Migraciones calls mandatory.
  • Hotel booking or invitation letter and proof of funds, which the visa process lists and which help if you are questioned on arrival.

When to arrange it

Visa applicants should create the reservation shortly before uploading documents to e-SAMI and ask the consulate whether it must still be live when the decision arrives, since review can take up to 9 working days. Visa-free travellers should have the hold live at check-in for Lima and on arrival at Migraciones.

Common mistakes

  • Uploading a fare quote with a Peruvian visa application. The Foreign Ministry says quotes are not accepted.
  • Crossing into Bolivia or Ecuador without passing a Migraciones post to register the exit.
  • Arriving with less than six months left on the passport.
  • Assuming you have 183 days. Many visitors are granted fewer, so check the TAM before booking the onward date.

Peru questions

01Does Peru require an onward ticket for visa-free visitors?

The official entry checklist does not list one and we found no official statement either way, so we mark it as unclear. Airlines can still ask on one-way itineraries, so carrying a verifiable departure booking is the safer choice.

02Can I use a flight reservation for a Peru tourist visa?

Yes. The Foreign Ministry asks for a round-trip ticket or reservation and only rules out quotes. The consul evaluates each application and may ask for more documents. Our page on flight reservations for visas explains how to present one.

03How do I find out how many days I was given in Peru?

Download your virtual TAM from Migraciones after arrival; it shows the authorised period of stay. Use that date, not the maximum, when you choose an onward flight.
