FlyProof

Onward ticket for Singapore

Short answer

Yes, you should have one. Singapore's Immigration & Checkpoints Authority says short-term travellers should have sufficient cash and proof of onward travel, and ICA officers decide at the checkpoint whether to grant a visit pass. Airlines flying into Changi can apply that on one-way bookings. A reservation with a booking reference the airline can look up is what many travellers show, but acceptance rests with the airline and ICA.

What proof of onward travel means here

Evidence that you will leave Singapore before your permitted stay ends, usually a flight out with a booking reference someone can look up. The full explanation, including what does and does not count, is in our proof of onward travel guide.

When you may be asked

  • At check-in for a one-way flight to Changi (SIN), where the agent checks you meet ICA's entry requirements.
  • At immigration clearance, where ICA officers determine whether to grant a visit pass and for how long.
  • At Woodlands or Tuas if you arrive overland from Malaysia, since the entry requirements apply to short-term travellers at every checkpoint.

Airline and check-in

  • Passengers transferring at Changi without immigration clearance do not submit the SG Arrival Card and are not entering Singapore, so the onward question belongs to their final destination.
  • A self-transfer where you collect bags and re-check them means clearing immigration, so the entry requirements apply even for a same-day connection.
  • If you are continuing to Malaysia by coach, that is onward travel in principle, but a check-in agent verifying a one-way flight may want a record they can open.

Why airlines check at all: do airlines check onward tickets?

Singapore: what to know

  • ICA's entry requirements page lists a passport valid for at least 6 months and says short-term travellers should have sufficient cash and proof of onward travel (tickets, visas).
  • The SG Arrival Card with electronic health declaration is submitted within 3 days before arrival, including the arrival day. It is free on ICA's e-service or the MyICA app, and ICA does not endorse paid submission services.
  • Visitors receive an electronic visit pass by email showing the period of stay granted and the last day allowed. Its validity is separate from any visa's validity.
  • Travellers from visa-required countries must hold a Singapore visa, issued as an e-visa after approval.
  • Biometrics such as fingerprints, face and iris are captured at clearance, and ICA says travellers who fail to comply may be denied entry.

What may count as proof

  • A flight or other onward booking out of Singapore, dated within the stay you expect.
  • Entry permission for your next destination if it needs a visa; ICA's own wording is tickets and visas.
  • Enough cash or cards for the stay.
  • Your SG Arrival Card confirmation email.

When to arrange it

Submit the SG Arrival Card in the 3 days before arrival, and make sure the onward reservation is live at check-in and on landing. For a stopover of a day or two, schedule the reservation for the evening before you fly.

Common mistakes

  • Filing the SG Arrival Card through a commercial site and paying for a free form.
  • Confusing the visa's validity with the visit pass. The e-Pass email sets how long you may stay.
  • Showing an onward flight to a country whose visa you do not have. ICA pairs tickets with visas for the next destination.
  • Assuming a quick self-transfer avoids the check. Leaving the transit area means clearing immigration.

Singapore questions

01Does Singapore require proof of onward travel?

ICA says short-term travellers should have sufficient cash and proof of onward travel, meaning tickets and any visas for the next place. Airlines can apply it on one-way bookings, and ICA officers decide on the visit pass.

02How long can I stay in Singapore as a visitor?

ICA officers decide at the checkpoint and email an e-Pass with the period granted and your last day. Check that email rather than assuming a fixed number of days.

03Can I leave Singapore by bus to Malaysia?

Yes, through Woodlands or Tuas. For the check-in agent before your flight in, a flight reservation from Changi to Kuala Lumpur or Jakarta is easier to verify. See the Malaysia page for the next border.

04Do I need the SG Arrival Card for a transit?

Not if you transit or transfer without clearing immigration, according to ICA. If you leave the airport, you need it.
