What proof of onward travel means here
Evidence that you will leave South Korea before your permitted stay ends, usually a flight out with a booking reference someone can look up. The full explanation, including what does and does not count, is in our proof of onward travel guide.
When you may be asked
- At check-in for a one-way flight to Seoul Incheon (ICN), Gimpo (GMP) or Busan Gimhae (PUS), where the airline checks your passport and K-ETA status and may ask how you will leave.
- At the immigration inspection on arrival. The Korean embassy notice says a visa only shows that preliminary requirements are met, and the officer alone decides whether you enter.
- When your trip has no fixed end date. GOV.UK's wording for visa-free visits is that you must have an onward or return ticket, so an open-ended stay still needs one.
Airline and check-in
- Short flights to Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, Taipei and Hong Kong make an onward hold from ICN or PUS simple to arrange.
- Visa-free travellers who are not on the exemption list need K-ETA approval before departure. GOV.UK says approval can take up to 72 hours and that sites other than the official K-ETA website are generally scams.
- If you plan to leave Busan by ferry for Japan, carry that booking, but expect a check-in agent abroad to look for a flight reference it can open.
Why airlines check at all: do airlines check onward tickets?
South Korea: what to know
- GOV.UK says British visitors can enter for up to 90 days for tourism or short business trips, must hold an onward or return ticket, and may not work while visa-free, including as English teachers.
- K-ETA is Korea's electronic travel authorisation. GOV.UK says anyone eligible for visa-free entry usually needs it before departure.
- Korea's embassy in Spain says K-ETA is waived for 22 countries and regions from 1 April 2023 to 31 December 2026, including the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, Singapore, the UK, Germany, France and Spain. Check again for travel in 2027.
- Travellers on the waiver list can still apply for K-ETA if they want to skip the arrival card. The embassy gives the fee as 10,000 won.
- Without K-ETA, foreign arrivals hand in an arrival card. GOV.UK says the e-Arrival card can be filed online free of charge within 72 hours before landing, and paper forms are still available.
- For tourist stays up to 90 days, GOV.UK says the passport must be valid beyond the date you leave South Korea; long-term visas need 6 months of validity on arrival.
What may count as proof
- An onward or return ticket out of South Korea dated within 90 days, or within the stay your visa allows.
- Evidence of funds and of where you will stay, which the embassy notice recommends carrying alongside the return flight ticket.
- Your K-ETA approval, or the e-Arrival card confirmation if you are exempt or travelling without one.
- Papers that explain the trip, such as a detailed itinerary or an invitation letter, which the notice puts first on its list.
Reservation or paid ticket
| Reservation (hold) | Paid ticket | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A seat held in the airline's system, unpaid | A paid fare with an e-ticket number |
| Booking reference | Yes, verifiable on the airline's site | Yes |
| Can you board with it | No, unless you pay the airline before the deadline | Yes |
| How long it lasts | Until the airline's payment deadline, often hours to a few days | Until the flight |
| If you do not use it | The airline releases the seats automatically | Refund depends on the fare rules |

When to arrange it
If you need K-ETA, apply at least three days before departure, since GOV.UK says approval can take 72 hours. Keep the onward reservation live from check-in through the arrival inspection at ICN, GMP or PUS, and file the e-Arrival card in the 72 hours before landing if you are not using K-ETA.
Common mistakes
- Travelling on a passport that expires during the trip. GOV.UK says it must remain valid beyond your departure date.
- Paying an agency site for K-ETA. GOV.UK says to apply only through the Korean government's official website.
- Relying on the K-ETA waiver for a trip in 2027 without checking. The announced waiver runs to 31 December 2026.
- Treating a Korean visa as a guarantee of entry. The embassy notice says the officer at the airport makes the final decision.
South Korea questions
01Do I need an onward ticket for South Korea?
GOV.UK says visa-free visitors must have an onward or return ticket, and a Korean embassy notice advises carrying a return flight ticket even with a visa. Plan to show a dated exit.
02Is K-ETA still required in 2026?
For most visa-free nationalities, yes. Citizens of the 22 countries and regions on the temporary waiver list do not need it until 31 December 2026, although they can still apply to skip the arrival card.
03Does the exit from South Korea have to be a flight home?
No. GOV.UK's wording is an onward or return ticket, so a flight from Seoul to Tokyo or Taipei counts in the same way as one home.
04Will a held reservation work at Korean immigration?
No source we reviewed says whether the ticket must be paid for. A reservation with a reference the officer can check shows a dated exit while it is live, and the officer decides. Our guide on onward tickets at the airport explains how these checks usually run.
