FlyProof

Onward ticket for Sri Lanka

Short answer

Yes, it is part of the visa conditions. Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration & Emigration says visit visa holders should hold a ticket to return to their country of domicile, or a visa for their next destination, and enough funds for the stay and the return passage. The ETA itself can be obtained before you book, so the checks that matter are at the airline counter and at immigration in Colombo. A verifiable reservation shows a dated exit, but the officer decides.

What proof of onward travel means here

Evidence that you will leave Sri Lanka before your permitted stay ends, usually a flight out with a booking reference someone can look up. The full explanation, including what does and does not count, is in our proof of onward travel guide.

When you may be asked

  • At immigration in Colombo (CMB), where the department's visa conditions include a ticket home or a visa for your next destination.
  • At check-in for a one-way flight to Colombo, when the airline assesses whether you meet those conditions.
  • When getting the ETA on arrival at the port of entry, one of the application routes the department lists.

Airline and check-in

  • The ETA FAQ says an ETA is not a pre-condition to board a flight or vessel to Sri Lanka, and the department lists issue on arrival as one application route.
  • Many visitors connect through Gulf, Indian or Southeast Asian hubs. On separate tickets, each check-in desk can ask again about your exit from Sri Lanka.
  • An onward ticket to Malé only helps if you also meet the Maldives' own entry rules, which the next airline may check.

Why airlines check at all: do airlines check onward tickets?

Sri Lanka: what to know

  • Foreign nationals, with listed exceptions, need an ETA for a short visit for tourism, business or transit, according to the department's ETA site. It can be applied for online, at Sri Lankan missions, at the head office in Colombo, or on arrival at the port of entry.
  • From 25 May 2026, nationals of 40 countries receive a free tourist ETA for 30 days with double entry; Maldivian nationals receive 90 days.
  • On a second entry, only the balance of the 30 days is granted.
  • The ETA site gives two versions for Singapore, Maldives and Seychelles nationals: its exempt list says they need no ETA for visits of up to 30 days, while its home page says they must obtain one.
  • Visit visa conditions include funds for your maintenance and for the payment of your return passage.

What may count as proof

  • A ticket out of Sri Lanka, or a visa and ticket for your next destination.
  • Your ETA approval notice, unless you plan to obtain it on arrival.
  • Evidence of funds covering the stay and your onward fare.

When to arrange it

Get the ETA first (the FAQ says you can before booking a ticket), then create the onward reservation so it is valid at check-in and on arrival in Colombo.

Common mistakes

  • Paying a look-alike ETA website. The Department of Immigration & Emigration runs eta.gov.lk.
  • Assuming the free ETA removes the other conditions. The ticket and funds conditions still apply.
  • Booking an onward flight to a country whose visa you do not have. The department pairs the ticket with a visa for the next destination.
  • Counting a second entry as a fresh 30 days.

Sri Lanka questions

01Do I need a return ticket for Sri Lanka?

The department's visa conditions include a written assurance (a ticket) to return to your country of domicile, or a visa to your next destination, for visit visa holders. Plan to show one at check-in and on arrival.

02Do I need a ticket before applying for the Sri Lanka ETA?

No. The ETA FAQ says an ETA can be obtained even before booking your ticket. The ticket matters later, when you fly and arrive.

03Is the Sri Lanka ETA free now?

For nationals of 40 countries, the ETA site says the tourist ETA has been free for 30 days since 25 May 2026. Other nationalities pay the listed fee.

04Where can I fly next from Colombo?

Malé, Dubai, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Mumbai and Delhi all have direct flights from Colombo. Run Trip Check for your passport before you choose.
