What proof of onward travel means here
Evidence that you will leave Thailand before your permitted stay ends, usually a flight out with a booking reference someone can look up. The full explanation, including what does and does not count, is in our proof of onward travel guide.
When you may be asked
- At check-in for a one-way flight into Bangkok (BKK or DMK), Phuket, Chiang Mai, Krabi or Koh Samui, because the airline has to be satisfied you meet the visa exemption conditions before it boards you.
- At the immigration counter on arrival. The embassy says officers may also ask for proof of funds of 20,000 THB per person, or interview you.
- On a second or later visit in the same year. The embassy says the exemption can be used only twice within a calendar year, so a passport full of recent Thai stamps may draw questions.
- When applying for a Thai e-Visa, where the tourist category lists a travel booking confirmation among the documents.
Airline and check-in
- Budget carriers into Don Mueang (DMK) and full-service airlines into Suvarnabhumi (BKK) both run the document check at the departure airport, and the question is most likely when your booking has no return.
- If you hold one of the passports that now uses visa on arrival, the embassy's wording is fully paid onward travel tickets. Carry a paid ticket for that route rather than a held reservation.
- Flying in on separate tickets through Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or a Gulf hub means a second check at the transfer desk. Keep the reservation PDF and booking reference ready for both.
Why airlines check at all: do airlines check onward tickets?
Thailand: what to know
- Visa exemption from 15 September 2026: up to 30 days, for tourism only, for passports on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs list of 60 countries and territories, as published by the Royal Thai Embassy in London.
- The same list gives Seychelles and Mauritius a 15-day exemption, and sets separate periods for countries with bilateral agreements, such as 90 days for Korea and Brazil and 30 days for China and Vietnam.
- The embassy says the exemption can be used only twice within a calendar year, and that a stay can be extended by up to 30 days through the Immigration Bureau.
- Visa on arrival from 15 September 2026 covers only Azerbaijan, Belarus and Serbia: 15 days, a 2,000 THB fee in cash, fully paid onward tickets within 15 days, and funds of 10,000 THB per person or 20,000 THB per family.
- Every non-Thai traveller submits the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) within 3 days before arrival, including the arrival date. Departure details are only an optional field on the form.
- The Thai e-Visa for tourism lists a travel booking confirmation, proof of accommodation and financial evidence of no less than 20,000 THB.
What may count as proof
- A flight out of Thailand dated within your 30 days, with a booking reference the airline can open under Manage booking.
- An overland exit, such as a bus or train booking to Malaysia or Laos. The embassy asks for proof of onward travel rather than a flight specifically, but the check-in agent decides what they accept.
- Proof of accommodation, which the embassy lists alongside onward travel.
- Evidence of funds, in case the officer asks for 20,000 THB per person.
- For visa on arrival: a paid onward ticket, because a held reservation is not paid.
Reservation or paid ticket
| Reservation (hold) | Paid ticket | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A seat held in the airline's system, unpaid | A paid fare with an e-ticket number |
| Booking reference | Yes, verifiable on the airline's site | Yes |
| Can you board with it | No, unless you pay the airline before the deadline | Yes |
| How long it lasts | Until the airline's payment deadline, often hours to a few days | Until the flight |
| If you do not use it | The airline releases the seats automatically | Refund depends on the fare rules |

When to arrange it
Schedule the reservation so it is live at check-in and still live when you land, usually by creating it the day before you fly. Submit the TDAC in the 3 days before arrival. Our guide on when to buy an onward ticket covers the timing trade-offs.
Common mistakes
- Planning around the old 60-day exemption. Stays under the scheme from 15 September 2026 are up to 30 days, so an exit dated on day 45 no longer fits.
- Showing a held reservation where the visa on arrival rule asks for a fully paid ticket.
- Treating the TDAC as onward proof. It is an arrival card; the booking itself is the proof.
- Entering on the exemption a third time in one calendar year. The embassy advises applying for a visa if you will visit more than twice. Long stays are covered in our digital nomad guide.
- Letting the hold lapse before an early morning departure. Compare the validity on your pass with your check-in time.
Thailand questions
01Do I need an onward ticket to enter Thailand without a visa?
The Royal Thai Embassy in London lists proof of onward travel scheduled within 30 days of arrival among the documents visa-exempt visitors must present. A verifiable reservation shows a dated exit; whether it is enough is up to the airline and the officer.
02How long can I stay in Thailand visa-free now?
From 15 September 2026, up to 30 days for tourism on eligible passports, extendable by up to 30 days through the Immigration Bureau. Some nationalities have different periods under bilateral agreements, so check your passport on the embassy list.
03Can a flight reservation be used for the Thai visa on arrival?
The embassy asks visa on arrival applicants for fully paid onward travel tickets scheduled within 15 days. A held reservation is not paid, so buy a ticket for that entry. From 15 September 2026 visa on arrival covers only three nationalities.
04Does the Thailand Digital Arrival Card ask for my departure flight?
The TDAC asks for your arrival flight, address in Thailand and travel purpose. Departure information is an optional field. It is free on the official site and must be submitted within 3 days before arrival.
05Which onward flight makes sense from Bangkok?
A short hop to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi or Phnom Penh dated before day 30 is easy to explain. Run Trip Check for your passport first.
