What proof of onward travel means here
Evidence that you will leave the United Arab Emirates before your permitted stay ends, usually a flight out with a booking reference someone can look up. The full explanation, including what does and does not count, is in our proof of onward travel guide.
When you may be asked
- At check-in for flights to Dubai (DXB) or Abu Dhabi (AUH), where the airline confirms your visa or visa-on-arrival eligibility and can ask how you will leave the UAE.
- When a hotel, travel agency or airline arranges your tourist visa. u.ae says agencies and hotels do this if you buy the ticket through them and hold a reservation with them.
- When you or your sponsor apply through ICP or GDRFA, whose visit and tourist visa conditions include a return or onward ticket.
Airline and check-in
- Emirates, Etihad and flydubai offer visa services for their own passengers, and u.ae says one condition is flying with the airline that arranges it. Check those terms before booking a different carrier.
- Dubai is a common stopover. If you leave the airport on a one-way ticket, the airline sees a UAE arrival with no departure, and an onward booking from DXB or AUH answers that.
- Short flights to Muscat, Doha, Bahrain or Istanbul are easy exits from the UAE; any international departure inside your permitted stay can serve as the onward leg.
Why airlines check at all: do airlines check onward tickets?
The United Arab Emirates: what to know
- GOV.UK says British visitors get a free visitor visa stamped on arrival, valid for up to 90 days over a 180-day period that starts on first entry, and that passports must be valid for at least six months from arrival.
- In June 2026 the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced 14-day or 60-day visas on arrival for nationals of Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Kenya and South Africa who hold a residence permit from the United States, an EU country, the UK, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand or Canada.
- GDRFA Dubai offers Indian citizens with a US green card or visa, or a UK or EU residence visa, a 14-day visa on arrival that can be extended once, provided the passport and the qualifying document have at least six months of validity.
- GDRFA's single-entry tourist visa is issued for 30 or 60 days through a tourism sponsor, and its conditions include a passport valid for six months, medical insurance and a travel ticket to continue the journey or leave the UAE.
- ICP's visit visa conditions list valid health insurance, a passport valid for at least six months and a return travel ticket.
- The multiple-entry five-year tourist visa, according to u.ae, requires a bank balance of 4,000 USD or equivalent over the last six months, health insurance and a ticket showing a continuing or return journey from the UAE.
What may count as proof
- For a pre-arranged visa, a flight booking out of the UAE that your sponsor can include with the application and that you can show at check-in.
- A hotel reservation, which agencies and hotels that sponsor tourist visas expect you to hold with them.
- Health insurance valid in the UAE, which both ICP and GDRFA list for visit and tourist visas.
- For a visa on arrival, a passport valid six months beyond arrival and, for residence-based schemes, the qualifying residence permit, green card or visa.
Reservation or paid ticket
| Reservation (hold) | Paid ticket | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A seat held in the airline's system, unpaid | A paid fare with an e-ticket number |
| Booking reference | Yes, verifiable on the airline's site | Yes |
| Can you board with it | No, unless you pay the airline before the deadline | Yes |
| How long it lasts | Until the airline's payment deadline, often hours to a few days | Until the flight |
| If you do not use it | The airline releases the seats automatically | Refund depends on the fare rules |

When to arrange it
If a hotel, agency or airline is applying for your UAE visa, have the onward reservation in place before they submit, because the ticket is one of the conditions they check. Visa-on-arrival travellers should schedule the hold for check-in so it is still live when they reach passport control at DXB or AUH.
Common mistakes
- Booking the onward date beyond a 30-day or 60-day tourist visa. The departure should fall inside the stay the visa allows.
- Mixing up transit and entry. GOV.UK sets a lower passport validity for travellers who stay airside; once you pass immigration you must meet the entry rules, visa included.
- Relying on a residence-based visa-on-arrival scheme without the qualifying permit, or with one that has less validity left than the scheme requires.
- Getting a visa through one airline's visa service and then flying with another carrier.
The United Arab Emirates questions
01Do I need a return ticket for Dubai?
For a sponsored tourist or visit visa, yes: GDRFA and ICP list a ticket to leave or continue your journey among the conditions. For visa on arrival the official pages we checked do not mention one, but your airline can still ask at check-in.
02Can the onward ticket be to a third country instead of home?
GDRFA's wording is a ticket to continue your journey or to leave the UAE, so an onward flight to another country fits. Muscat, Doha and Istanbul are short, frequent options from Dubai.
03Can a UAE embassy issue my tourist visa?
No. u.ae says UAE embassies do not issue tourist visas; a UAE airline, a licensed tour agency or a hotel applies on your behalf, or you apply online through ICP or GDRFA.
04Is a held reservation enough for a UAE visa application?
The conditions say ticket, and the agency, hotel or airline processing the visa decides what it submits. Ask them before relying on a held reservation. Our comparison of a dummy ticket and a real reservation explains why a verifiable PNR matters.
