What proof of onward travel means here
Evidence that you will leave Vietnam before your permitted stay ends, usually a flight out with a booking reference someone can look up. The full explanation, including what does and does not count, is in our proof of onward travel guide.
When you may be asked
- Mainly at check-in outside Vietnam for a one-way flight into SGN, HAN or DAD. The airline decides what it needs to see, and Vietnam's official sources do not settle it.
- At passport control, where officers stamp a temporary residence certificate. The e-Visa FAQ tells you to check that stamp and report mistakes before leaving the border.
- When moving on by land to Cambodia or Laos, since an e-Visa holder must leave through one of the designated international border gates.
Airline and check-in
- Where the official rule is silent, the check-in agent's reading of the carrier's own document rules decides whether you board. A reservation they can look up avoids a stand-off.
- Check the name on your e-Visa against your passport before flying. The portal asks for it exactly as printed on the passport's machine-readable line.
- An e-Visa holder does not have to leave from the airport of arrival. The FAQ confirms any designated gate works, so a reservation from Hanoi after landing in Ho Chi Minh City is consistent.
Why airlines check at all: do airlines check onward tickets?
Vietnam: what to know
- Visa exemption: citizens of countries Vietnam exempts unilaterally get a 45-day temporary residence certificate. Exemptions under international treaties follow the treaty, or 30 days if it sets no period, according to the official e-Visa portal.
- e-Visa: valid for up to 90 days, single or multiple entry, USD 25 or USD 50, applied for only at evisa.gov.vn or thithucdientu.gov.vn. The fee is not refunded if the visa is refused.
- e-Visa holders must enter and exit through government-designated international border gates. The list includes land crossings such as Moc Bai toward Cambodia and Lao Bao and Cau Treo toward Laos.
- The Immigration Department recommends completing a pre-arrival form online before entering to speed up processing.
- You can apply for an e-Visa up to a year before entry, and its validity must end at least 30 days before your passport expires.
What may count as proof
- A flight out of Vietnam with a booking reference, for the airline check.
- Your e-Visa if your passport is not visa-exempt.
- The address of your first night's accommodation, which the e-Visa form asks for as your first temporary address.
Reservation or paid ticket
| Reservation (hold) | Paid ticket | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A seat held in the airline's system, unpaid | A paid fare with an e-ticket number |
| Booking reference | Yes, verifiable on the airline's site | Yes |
| Can you board with it | No, unless you pay the airline before the deadline | Yes |
| How long it lasts | Until the airline's payment deadline, often hours to a few days | Until the flight |
| If you do not use it | The airline releases the seats automatically | Refund depends on the fare rules |

When to arrange it
Create the reservation for your check-in day. If you need an e-Visa, apply early (the portal accepts applications up to a year before entry) so the visa dates and your onward plan line up.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting to show the e-Visa at the counter. The FAQ describes travellers admitted under an exemption by mistake and asks them to check the stamp.
- Planning an overland exit through a crossing that is not on the designated list while holding an e-Visa.
- Applying on a look-alike e-Visa website. The Immigration Department names only evisa.gov.vn and thithucdientu.gov.vn.
- Assuming every visa-free passport gets 45 days. Treaty-based exemptions can be shorter.
Vietnam questions
01Does Vietnam require proof of onward travel?
Vietnam's official e-Visa portal does not list it as a condition for visa-exempt or e-Visa entry. Airlines can still ask before a one-way flight, so treat it as possible rather than required. Run Trip Check for your passport.
02Do I have to leave Vietnam from the airport where I arrived?
No. The e-Visa FAQ says e-Visa holders need not exit through the gate they entered, as long as it is a designated international border gate.
03Can my onward plan be a bus to Cambodia?
For immigration, an overland exit through a designated gate such as Moc Bai is fine. For the airline check before your flight in, a dated flight reservation is easier for an agent to verify. See the Cambodia page for the other side of that border.
04How long can I stay in Vietnam without a visa?
Passports on Vietnam's unilateral exemption list get 45 days. Treaty-based exemptions follow the treaty, or 30 days if none is set. Check your nationality on the e-Visa portal.
