VietJet Air: onward ticket checks
Short answer
Vietjet's terms and conditions and its travel document page do not mention a return or onward ticket. They let Vietjet refuse check-in when you lack the documents your destination requires, and ask for a deposit at the departure airport when it has a legal basis to believe you would be refused entry. The destination decides what you need: Thailand, for example, asks visa-exempt tourists for proof of onward travel within 30 days of arrival.
What Vietjet's terms say about documents
- Article 7.2 (terms effective 12 January 2026): Vietjet may refuse check-in when you do not hold the travel documents, permits or visas the authorities require to enter a country.
- Article 7.8: before departure you must present every travel document the laws of the countries concerned require, and Vietjet may refuse carriage if you do not or if your identification appears invalid.
- Article 7.10: if Vietjet pays a fine or deposit because you could not present the required documents, you repay it, and Vietjet may offset the amount against the unused value of your ticket after seven days' notice.
The travel document page, effective 3 February 2026, sets a passport valid at least six months from entry as the general rule, says a visa may be needed, and sends travellers to the IATA Travel Centre and the relevant embassy or consulate. Neither document lists an onward ticket.
The deposit clause
Article 7.9 contains a provision we did not find in the other airline terms reviewed for these pages. When Vietjet has a legal basis to believe a passenger would be refused entry or transit, it may request a deposit at the departure airport to cover the return fare, penalties and related costs. The deposit is refunded if the destination or transit country admits you, within 15 working days of that acceptance.
Refusing to pay that deposit is itself a ground for denied boarding under Article 8.1. If you are turned away on arrival anyway, Article 7.9 makes you pay the ticket price and any fines for the flight back, and that payment is not refunded.
Point to point: separate flights, separate checks
Article 4.1 says Vietjet is strictly a point-to-point carrier and takes no responsibility for connecting flights. The travel document page adds that connecting passengers need valid documents for entry at each transit point and must collect their bags and check in again for the next segment.
Fly into Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi and leave on another airline, and the Vietjet agent has no link between the two bookings, so carry the onward reference yourself. What Vietnam's own sources say is on the Vietnam page.
Flying Vietjet into Bangkok or Phuket? The Royal Thai Embassy in London asks tourists on the visa exemption for proof of onward travel within 30 days of arrival, and visa-on-arrival travellers for fully paid onward tickets within 15 days of entry. See the Thailand page.
Preparing for a Vietjet check-in
- 01Check the destination, not the airlineLook up the entry rules for the country you land in. Vietjet's own documents point you to the IATA Travel Centre and the embassy.
- 02Book an exit inside your permitted stayA departure dated after your visa or exemption runs out does not show that you will leave on time.
- 03Carry the reference and the deposit risk in mindIf an agent raises the deposit, a verifiable onward booking is the evidence that you plan to leave.
FlyProof operates independently of Vietjet. Its reservations carry a booking reference the agent can look up; a reservation is not a Vietjet ticket and cannot replace one where a paid ticket is required.
Questions
Does Vietjet require a return ticket to Vietnam?
Vietjet's published terms and travel document page do not list one. The agent checks you against the entry requirements that apply to you, and the Vietnam page covers those with official sources.
Can Vietjet make me pay a deposit at check-in?
Yes, under Article 7.9, when it has a legal basis to believe you would be refused entry or transit. It is refunded if you are admitted, and refusing to pay it can lead to denied boarding.
Is my fare refunded if I am refused entry?
No. Article 7.9 says you pay the ticket price and fines for the return flight and that Vietjet does not refund the payment.
Does Vietjet look after my connection to another airline?
No. Article 4.1 makes Vietjet strictly point to point, and connecting passengers collect their bags and check in again for the next flight.
